PE teachers, Miss Swain and Mrs Ringshall invested a huge amount of time and effort into preparing a slick, amazingly well-organised Sports Day. What an amazing day, the weather was good, a great atmosphere around the school and everyone showed true commitment to their House and had so much fun.

Parents started arriving before 9.00am, many of whom helped erect gazebos and set up the refreshments supplied by the PTA. Boys and girls from the age of 4 to 16 took part in a wide variety of events from the traditional athletics and swimming races to quoit, speed bounce and vortex competitions so all abilities were catered for.

As the day went on, the sun came out and shone on the competitors and the large number of parents, who came to support, many of whom were tempted by the delicious cream teas on offer.

The morning began with the Juniors swimming. Reception to year 2 started the races with a number of width races, More house was the clear winner, followed by Clitherow. Year 3 – 6 followed next with length races and relays, where again More came 1st followed by Clitherow. Outside the year 9 and 10s played rounder’s in a round robin tournament and in true house spirit the atmosphere was great with everyone in their house t-shirts. More again won the rounder’s followed by Howard. On the tennis courts the year 7 and 8s played tennis in a pair’s tournament and this time Clitherow won followed by More.

After break everyone rotated activities. The year 3 – 6 played rounder’s with More winning followed by Howard, while the reception to year 2 students played Tee ball, an adaption of rounder’s. The year 9 and 10s played tennis with Howard winning and Campion and More coming joint 2nd. The year 7 and 8s completed a number of swimming races and relays, with Clitherow winning and Howard coming 2nd. Before senior lunch, the year 7 and 8s played rounders, with Clitherow and More coming 1st and 2nd while the year 9 and 10s were in the swimming pool and once again More won. So even before the afternoon activities, it was clear to see which house was doing well.

Once the juniors were refuelled and rested, they were ready for the afternoon athletics events, which started with running races on the field, from 15m sprint to 6 laps around the field followed by relay races with Howard winning overall. The juniors then went onto the tennis courts to complete a number of athletics activities such as throwing and jumping still trying to get points for their house. The seniors began their afternoon with a number of throwing and jumping events on the field.

Once the field events were completed, the seniors began the track events, from 30m sprints to 8 laps, the girls continued to show great commitment, determination and team spirit throughout. The last events were the relay events where everyone got involved and either ran or supported each other. More won both the field and track events for the seniors.

Throughout the day the students were aware of the overall score from all the activities so it was really exciting when they were all added up and announced, Howard won the Juniors over, Clitherow 2nd, More 3rd and Campion 4th, More came 1st in the Seniors, Clitherow 2nd, Howard 3rd and Campion 4th. Which meant overall More was 1st, winning the Sports day cup that hadn’t been won since 1986 by Campion, with Howard 2nd, Clitherow 3rd and Campion 4th.

Everyone had a fantastic time and was feeling a little jaded the next day!
